What to do with Desire

Sometimes we think there is only two options when we have a desire.

Yes, I will give in to my desire or…

No, I'm going to resist the desire.

But what if there is a third option? Keep reading to find out what it is.

When you say yes to the desire to eat sugar, there is always a negative consequence.

That could be putting on extra pounds or simply feeling sick after eating too much of it.

When you choose to say no to your desire for sugar through avoidance, resistance or willpower it’s a bit like playing whack-a-mole.

You keep knocking it down, but it just pops up again when you least expect it. It takes a lot of energy to play that game.

Saying no also has you in a state of “Why Me?” or “It’s not fair.” This is a terrible place to be.

Neither of these options feels very good. Thankfully, you have another option.

The 3rd choice you could make is Curiosity.

You could choose to be curious about why you have the desire in the first place.

Some things you could be curious about are:

  • Where do I feel desire in my body?

  • What are the thoughts I’m having when I feel desire?

  • What time of day do I usually get the desire for sugar?

  • Is there a particular place that triggers desire in me?

  • Before I felt this desire, what was my emotional state?

Take time to notice patterns that show up. These are things that you won’t be able to see without being curious.

Lastly, there are three reasons why you should choose curiosity.

  1. Curiosity gives the brain something to do

  2. Desire becomes less intense when you are curious.

  3. Becoming curious helps to remind yourself that you are in charge…always

Go forth and become more curious about your desires. Let me know how it goes.
